Lighters: recalls and official safety alerts
50 official alerts and recalls concern lighters: 44 from EU Safety Gate and 6 from US CPSC. The first dates from 31 July 2020, the latest from 29 September 2026. In the last four complete quarters there were 16, up from 13 in the four quarters before. The hazards named most often are burns (84%), fire (76%) and chemical (18%). Read from the official risk descriptions, the most common reasons are missing warnings or child-resistant closure (12%), too flammable (10%) and restricted chemical above the legal limit (8%). 54% were for products made in China and 20% were for products made in United Kingdom. 36% of the EU alerts were marked as sold online, and 2% name an online marketplace, most often Amazon, eBay and Walmart. The most common outcome was withdrawn from the market (70% of EU alerts); 64% included a measure ordered by an authority. Chemicals named in the official risk descriptions include phthalates, lead and short-chain chlorinated paraffins.
