Small magnets can be swallowed
174 official alerts and recalls concern products flagged for “small magnets can be swallowed”: 124 from EU Safety Gate and 50 from US CPSC. The first dates from 26 February 2020, the latest from 1 October 2026. In the last four complete quarters there were 46, up from 22 in the four quarters before. The hazards named most often are injuries (85%), choking (34%) and chemical (28%). 87% were for products made in China. 47% of the EU alerts were marked as sold online, and 25% name an online marketplace, most often Amazon, Bol and Walmart. The most common outcome was withdrawn from the market (51% of EU alerts); 31% included a measure ordered by an authority. Chemicals named in the official risk descriptions include lead.
