Laser pointers from China
74 official alerts and recalls concern laser pointers made in China, 13 of them in 2025 (data to 1 October 2026).
74 EU Safety Gate alerts concern laser pointers made in China. The first dates from 17 December 2019, the latest from 16 September 2026. In the last four complete quarters there were 18, up from 16 in the four quarters before. The hazards named most often are damage to sight (100%), electric shock (9%) and burns (3%). Read from the official risk descriptions, the most common reasons are laser, UV or light too strong (100%), live parts can be touched (8%) and insufficient insulation or moisture protection (8%). 35% of the EU alerts were marked as sold online, and 26% name an online marketplace, most often Amazon, Bol and Otto. The most common outcome was withdrawn from the market (51% of EU alerts); 77% included a measure ordered by an authority. Chemicals named in the official risk descriptions include lead.

No rate: fewer than 5 alerts in 2025, or less than €50M of EU imports, or no clean customs-code match for this category.
Rates divide EU Safety Gate alerts by the value of extra-EU imports in the same customs codes (UN Comtrade, EU-27, converted from US dollars at the ECB annual average rate). They measure how often regulators flag products from this origin against the trade in them, not the share of products that are unsafe.
