Takedowns from online marketplaces are now in one in five EU product alerts
Numbers frozen on 1 October 2026. Every alert row on this site lists its measures.</p>
Each EU Safety Gate alert records what was done about the product: withdrawal, recall, a sales ban, a rejection at the border. One measure has grown fast: removal of the listing from an online marketplace.
The numbers
| Year | EU Safety Gate alerts | With a marketplace takedown | Share |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2022 | 2,168 | 215 | 9.9% |
| 2023 | 3,366 | 223 | 6.6% |
| 2024 | 4,113 | 238 | 5.8% |
| 2025 | 4,631 | 469 | 10.1% |
| 2026, to 1 October | 2,910 | 559 | 19.2% |
The 2026 total, after nine months, is already more than double 2024's for the whole year. The second quarter of 2026 set a record with 223.
The last 12 months
There were 734 takedowns in the 12 months to 1 October 2026.
- Which platforms: 633 name the marketplace. The most frequent are Amazon (325), AliExpress (140), Shein (98), eBay (84), Temu (52) and TikTok Shop (33).
- Mostly voluntary: 627 (85%) were taken by the business itself rather than ordered by an authority.
- Mostly made in China: 617 (84%) were made there.
- What was taken down: toys (265) and electrical appliances (148). The most common reasons are small parts a child can swallow (225) and restricted chemicals (212).
- Often the only measure: in 257 cases the takedown was the only measure recorded, with no recall or withdrawal elsewhere.
- Who filed them: France filed half (367).
What this does not show
- It is not a count of all listings removed. Marketplaces remove far more listings under the Product Safety Pledge+ and Digital Services Act notices, and most of those never become an alert.
- A takedown does not reach people who already bought the product. For that, see what to do if you bought a recalled product.
- The growth partly follows France's online checks: see who files marketplace alerts.
