Button batteries and batteries on Amazon: recalls and safety alerts
33 official alerts and recalls concern button batteries and batteries sold on Amazon: 18 from EU Safety Gate and 15 from US CPSC. The first dates from 7 October 2020, the latest from 1 September 2026. In the last four complete quarters there were 14, up from 4 in the four quarters before. The hazards named most often are chemical (64%), choking (55%) and fire (30%). Read from the official risk descriptions, the most common reasons are button cells or batteries are accessible (64%), small parts or stuffing can be swallowed (55%) and overheats, melts or short-circuits (30%). 88% were for products made in China, 3% were for products made in France and 3% were for products made in Indonesia. The most common outcome was removed from online marketplace (83% of EU alerts); 6% included a measure ordered by an authority.
