Hair dryers and straighteners on Amazon: recalls and safety alerts
26 official alerts and recalls concern hair dryers and straighteners sold on Amazon: 21 from EU Safety Gate and 5 from US CPSC. The first dates from 24 December 2020, the latest from 10 September 2026. In the last four complete quarters there were 21, up from 3 in the four quarters before. The hazards named most often are electric shock (73%), fire (31%) and burns (19%). Read from the official risk descriptions, the most common reasons are insufficient insulation or moisture protection (31%), overheats, melts or short-circuits (27%) and restricted chemical above the legal limit (19%). 85% were for products made in China, 4% were for products made in Estonia and 4% were for products made in Brazil. The most common outcome was removed from online marketplace (76% of EU alerts); 24% included a measure ordered by an authority. The EU alerts were notified most often by the authorities of France (67%), Northern Ireland (19%) and Germany (5%). Chemicals named in the official risk descriptions include lead and formaldehyde.
