Sunscreen: recalls and official safety alerts

77 EU Safety Gate alerts concern sunscreen. The first dates from 22 January 2020, the latest from 26 August 2026. In the last four complete quarters there were 9, down from 35 in the four quarters before. The hazards named most often are chemical (78%), other health risk (10%) and burns (9%). Read from the official risk descriptions, the most common reasons are ingredient not allowed in cosmetics (97%), protective equipment does not protect (18%) and restricted chemical above the legal limit (5%). 43% were for products made in Italy, 6% were for products made in Czechia and 5% were for products made in China. 12% of the EU alerts were marked as sold online, and 3% name an online marketplace, most often AliExpress and Amazon. The most common outcome was sales ban (64% of EU alerts); 82% included a measure ordered by an authority. Chemicals named in the official risk descriptions include lilial (BMHCA), formaldehyde and lead.
