Clothing and textiles from China
539 official alerts and recalls concern clothing and textiles made in China, 65 of them in 2025 (data to 1 October 2026).
539 official alerts and recalls concern clothing and textiles made in China: 474 from EU Safety Gate and 65 from US CPSC. The first dates from 18 December 2019, the latest from 1 October 2026. In the last four complete quarters there were 82, up from 73 in the four quarters before. The hazards named most often are chemical (47%), injuries (32%) and strangulation (18%). Read from the official risk descriptions, the most common reasons are restricted chemical above the legal limit (44%), cords or drawstrings can strangle (28%) and too flammable (9%). 30% of the EU alerts were marked as sold online, and 14% name an online marketplace, most often Amazon, Shein and AliExpress. The most common outcome was withdrawn from the market (56% of EU alerts); 63% included a measure ordered by an authority. Chemicals named in the official risk descriptions include phthalates, lead and cadmium.

Elevated: rank 1 of 3 origins with enough trade (higher rank = more alerts per dollar).
Rates divide EU Safety Gate alerts by the value of extra-EU imports in the same customs codes (UN Comtrade, EU-27, converted from US dollars at the ECB annual average rate). They measure how often regulators flag products from this origin against the trade in them, not the share of products that are unsafe.
