Hair dye: recalls and official safety alerts

172 EU Safety Gate alerts concern hair dye. The first dates from 17 December 2019, the latest from 24 September 2026. In the last four complete quarters there were 30, down from 72 in the four quarters before. The hazards named most often are chemical (97%), microbiological (3%) and environment (1%). Read from the official risk descriptions, the most common reasons are ingredient not allowed in cosmetics (99%), restricted chemical above the legal limit (12%) and microbial contamination (3%). 38% were for products made in Germany, 13% were for products made in India and 13% were for products made in Poland. 8% of the EU alerts were marked as sold online, and 5% name an online marketplace, most often Amazon, eBay and Allegro. The most common outcome was sales ban (37% of EU alerts); 80% included a measure ordered by an authority. Chemicals named in the official risk descriptions include lilial (BMHCA), boron and lead.
