Tattoo ink: recalls and official safety alerts
132 official alerts and recalls concern tattoo ink: 130 from EU Safety Gate and 2 from US CPSC. The first dates from 21 January 2020, the latest from 30 September 2026. In the last four complete quarters there were 28, down from 32 in the four quarters before. The hazards named most often are chemical (97%), microbiological (2%) and burns (2%). Read from the official risk descriptions, the most common reasons are restricted chemical above the legal limit (95%), ingredient not allowed in cosmetics (7%) and allergen not declared on the label (5%). 45% were for products made in United States, 20% were for products made in Spain and 8% were for products made in China. 55% of the EU alerts were marked as sold online, and 16% name an online marketplace, most often Amazon, Allegro and AliExpress. The most common outcome was withdrawn from the market (59% of EU alerts); 38% included a measure ordered by an authority. Chemicals named in the official risk descriptions include lead, nickel and PAHs.
