Tattoo ink on Amazon: recalls and safety alerts
20 official alerts and recalls concern tattoo ink sold on Amazon: 18 from EU Safety Gate and 2 from US CPSC. The first dates from 15 December 2022, the latest from 8 September 2026. In the last four complete quarters there were 9, up from 3 in the four quarters before. The hazards named most often are chemical (95%), injuries (5%) and microbiological (5%). Read from the official risk descriptions, the most common reasons are restricted chemical above the legal limit (85%), allergen not declared on the label (25%) and ingredient not allowed in cosmetics (15%). 45% were for products made in United States, 25% were for products made in China and 10% were for products made in United Kingdom. The most common outcome was removed from online marketplace (78% of EU alerts); 28% included a measure ordered by an authority. The EU alerts were notified most often by the authorities of France (44%), Sweden (33%) and Luxembourg (11%). Chemicals named in the official risk descriptions include lead, PAHs and nickel.
