Extension leads and power strips: recalls and official safety alerts
165 official alerts and recalls concern extension leads and power strips: 160 from EU Safety Gate and 5 from US CPSC. The first dates from 15 January 2020, the latest from 11 August 2026. In the last four complete quarters there were 45, up from 35 in the four quarters before. The hazards named most often are electric shock (86%), fire (38%) and burns (24%). Read from the official risk descriptions, the most common reasons are live parts can be touched (33%), overheats, melts or short-circuits (33%) and non-compliant plug or socket (27%). 78% were for products made in China and 12% were for products made in Poland. 37% of the EU alerts were marked as sold online, and 24% name an online marketplace, most often Amazon, AliExpress and eBay. The most common outcome was withdrawn from the market (81% of EU alerts); 62% included a measure ordered by an authority. Chemicals named in the official risk descriptions include lead.
