Shampoo, shower gel and soap: recalls and official safety alerts
806 official alerts and recalls concern shampoo, shower gel and soap: 792 from EU Safety Gate and 14 from US CPSC. The first dates from 20 February 2020, the latest from 28 September 2026. In the last four complete quarters there were 91, down from 227 in the four quarters before. The hazards named most often are chemical (94%), microbiological (3%) and injuries (1%). Read from the official risk descriptions, the most common reasons are ingredient not allowed in cosmetics (94%), restricted chemical above the legal limit (3%) and microbial contamination (3%). 51% were for products made in Italy, 8% were for products made in Germany and 8% were for products made in France. 5% of the EU alerts were marked as sold online, and 1% name an online marketplace, most often Amazon, eMAG and Walmart. The most common outcome was sales ban (74% of EU alerts); 93% included a measure ordered by an authority. Chemicals named in the official risk descriptions include lilial (BMHCA), lead and phthalates.
