Creams and lotions: recalls and official safety alerts
496 official alerts and recalls concern creams and lotions: 482 from EU Safety Gate and 14 from US CPSC. The first dates from 4 February 2020, the latest from 10 September 2026. In the last four complete quarters there were 55, down from 165 in the four quarters before. The hazards named most often are chemical (96%), microbiological (3%) and injuries (2%). Read from the official risk descriptions, the most common reasons are ingredient not allowed in cosmetics (96%), restricted chemical above the legal limit (6%) and microbial contamination (3%). 38% were for products made in Italy, 8% were for products made in Germany and 6% were for products made in France. 11% of the EU alerts were marked as sold online, and 2% name an online marketplace, most often Amazon, eBay and Walmart. The most common outcome was sales ban (67% of EU alerts); 85% included a measure ordered by an authority. Chemicals named in the official risk descriptions include lilial (BMHCA), lead and hydroquinone.
